The Cousteau Society has developed Teacher's Guides to accompany each issue of Cousteau Kids. Although the guides have been designed to meet professional educational standards for the Cousteau Kids in the Classroom program, they will also be helpful to parents who wish to enhance their children’s enjoyment of the magazine.

SCIENCE STANDARDS

The National Science Education Standards are designed to enable our nation’s students to achieve scientific literacy. They spell out a vision of science education that will make scientific literacy for all a reality in the 21st century. They point toward a destination and provide a road map for how to get there.

These issues of Cousteau Kids contain interesting supplementary activities that help you as a teacher achieve the following national science education standards:

Content Standard A: As a result of activities in grades K-4, all students should develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry and understanding about scientific inquiry

Content Standard C:  As a result of activities in grades K-4, all students should develop understanding of the characteristics of organisms, the life cycles of organisms, and organisms and environments.

Strands within Content Standard C that apply:

All organisms cause changes in the environment where they live. Some of these changes are detrimental to the organism or other organisms, whereas others are beneficial.

Organisms have basic needs. For example, animals need air, water, and food; plants require air, water, nutrients, and light. Organisms can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met. The world has many different environments, and distinct environments support the life of different types of organisms.
